Best practices for getting the most from HiFi

Pick the answering option that fits your day

Choose which calls HiFi answers in Account & settings > Answering Calls > HiFi answers calls from:

  • Unknown callers only works well if you want to talk to people you know and let HiFi screen everyone else.

  • All callers works well when you’re usually busy and want HiFi to handle every call first. You can still tap Take over at any time.

  • Contacts only works well if you take calls from new customers yourself and want HiFi to handle people you know.

  • All calls should ring me first works well if you want to answer everything, with HiFi as a backup when you miss or decline a call.

For details, see “Choose which calls HiFi answers”.

Set your name and greeting

A greeting with your name tells callers they’ve reached the right person. Set your Preferred name in Account & settings so HiFi can introduce itself as your assistant. Then open Manage your greeting to write a custom greeting of up to 150 characters, or keep the default.

If you use HiFi for a business, use your business name. See “Set the name HiFi uses with callers” and “Customize HiFi’s greeting”.

Test your setup with Call me

After you set up HiFi or change a setting, test it. In Account & settings, under Phone preferences, tap Call me. HiFi calls your phone so you can hear what callers hear. If you use call forwarding, this also checks that your calls reach HiFi.

See “Test your setup with a call from HiFi”.

Keep contacts access on

HiFi uses your contacts to recognize and greet people you know. Without access, everyone looks like an unknown caller, so Unknown callers only and Contacts only can’t sort calls correctly. Keep contacts access on, and if you share only selected contacts, add the people who call you most.

See “Give HiFi access to your contacts”.

Share your HiFi number

If you have a HiFi number, give it to the people and businesses who should reach you there. Tap Share next to Your HiFi number in Account & settings, or use the Share your number card on Home. Let people know they can call or text that number, and that they don’t need any special app to reach you.

See “Share your HiFi number”.

Use Snooze instead of turning answering off

When you’re expecting an important call, tap Snooze at the top of Home. Choose 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, or Until end of day. Your phone rings first, and HiFi still answers if you miss the call. Snooze ends on its own, so you don’t have to remember to turn answering back on.

If you turn answering off completely, HiFi doesn’t screen spam and fraud callers. See “Snooze call answering”.

Review Call Activity and clear it

Check Call Activity on Home regularly. Read summaries for calls HiFi handled, add suggested events and reminders, and call back anyone who needs you. When you’re caught up, tap Clear to mark calls as viewed. Clear doesn’t delete anything.

See “Review your Call Activity”.

Let callers know when a call is recorded

Depending on your state’s law, you may need to tell the other person that a call is being recorded. Turn on Announce call recording in Account & settings, and HiFi announces at the start of every call that it’s being recorded. HiFi can’t give legal advice, so check the rules that apply to you.

See “Announce call recording to callers”.

Use Incognito for sensitive moments

If a call turns to something private, like health or financial details, tap Incognito on the call screen. HiFi’s assistant stops listening, and that part of the call is left out of the transcript and summary. Scam warnings are also paused while Incognito is on. Turn Incognito off to get HiFi’s help again for the rest of the call.

See “Keep part of a call private with Incognito”.

Keep notifications on

Notifications tell you when a call comes in, when HiFi is handling a call, and when a new message arrives. Keep them on so you can take over a call or reply quickly. If you turned them off, turn them back on in your phone’s settings.

See “Permissions HiFi needs and why”.

Stay connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data

HiFi calls use the internet. A strong Wi-Fi or mobile data connection helps calls reach you with clear audio. If HiFi shows “Find a stronger data or wi-fi signal to improve call quality”, move to a spot with better signal or switch networks.

See “Internet calling and call quality”.
