What data HiFi collects during a call

What does HiFi create from a call?

HiFi keeps a record of your calls so you can review what happened afterward. Depending on the call, that record can include:

  • Call details: the phone number, the contact name if you have one, the date, time, and length of the call, and what happened (for example, answered by HiFi, missed, or blocked). These appear in Call Activity on Home.

  • Call recordings: HiFi records calls so it can create transcripts and summaries. A Recording indicator appears on the call screen while a call is recorded.

  • Voice messages: messages HiFi takes for you when you can’t answer.

  • Transcripts: a written record of what was said.

  • Call summaries: a short, plain-language summary of the call.

  • Events and reminders: suggested calendar events and to-dos that HiFi finds in the conversation. Nothing is added to your calendar or reminders unless you choose to add it.

  • Spam and scam signals: whether HiFi detected signs of a possible scam during the call.

For how Hiya handles this data, read the Hiya Privacy Policy.

What other information does HiFi use?

HiFi uses a few other kinds of information to handle your calls:

  • Your contacts: HiFi uses the contacts you allow it to access so it can recognize and greet people you know, and to decide which calls to answer based on your HiFi answers calls from setting. You can share all your contacts or, on iPhone, only selected contacts.

  • Your preferences: your name, greeting, voice, and answering settings, so HiFi can answer the way you chose.

  • Your Block list: numbers you’ve blocked, so HiFi can stop them from reaching you.

  • Spam reports: reports you send when you report a call or message as spam, or tell HiFi a call isn’t spam.

  • Call-quality and summary ratings: feedback you choose to give after a call. If you check Include transcript to help us improve when you rate a summary, the call’s transcript is sent to Hiya with your feedback.

Does HiFi tell callers they’re being recorded?

Yes, if you turn on Announce call recording. When it’s on, HiFi announces at the start of every call that the call is being recorded, and both you and the other person hear the announcement.

To turn it on, open Account & settings from the profile button on Home, then turn on Announce call recording.

Depending on your state’s law, you may need to tell the other person that a call is being recorded. The announcement is one way to let callers know. HiFi can’t give legal advice, so check the rules that apply to you. For more, see “Announce call recording to callers”.

How does Incognito limit what HiFi captures?

Turn on Incognito during a live call to keep part of the conversation out of your transcript and summary. While Incognito is on, HiFi’s assistant isn’t listening, and that portion of the call is left out. In-call scam warnings are also paused while Incognito is on.

When you turn Incognito off, HiFi goes back to normal for the rest of the call. The call shows an Incognito tag in Call Details, so you know the missing portion was left out on purpose.

For steps, see “Keep part of a call private with Incognito”.
