# Get a new HiFi number

## What is a HiFi number?

A **HiFi number** is a separate US phone number that HiFi gives you. It works alongside your personal number on the same phone. People can call and text your **HiFi number**, and HiFi answers or rings you based on your settings.

A **HiFi number** is a good fit if you want to keep work or side-business calls separate from personal calls. It’s also the only way to send and receive texts in HiFi. Your personal number keeps working in your built-in Phone and Messages apps.

## How do I get a HiFi number?

You can claim a **HiFi number** during setup or later from **Account & settings**. HiFi suggests a local number based on your location.

**During setup:** Tap **Get a new number** on iPhone, or **Claim your second number** on Android.

**After setup:**

1. On **Home**, tap the profile button in the top corner.

2. Find **Your HiFi number**. It says **No number claimed**.

3. Tap **Claim**.

Then choose your number:

1. On **Here’s your new HiFi number**, review the suggested local number.

2. Tap **Claim this number** to keep it, or tap **Choose a different area code** to search.

You can also start from the **Messages** tab, which offers to set up a number under **Enable text messaging**.

## How do I choose a different area code?

You can search for a number by city or area code.

1. Tap **Choose a different area code**.

2. In **Search by city or area code**, type a city name or a three-digit area code, such as “Seattle” or “206”.

3. Pick a number from the results.

4. Tap **Claim this number**.

If you see **No number available**, HiFi couldn’t find a number in that area right now. Tap **Search another area code** and try a nearby city or area code.

## Can I get a HiFi number if I use call forwarding?

Yes, but you need to turn off call forwarding first. If forwarding is on, HiFi shows “You’ll need to turn off call forwarding on your carrier before you can claim a virtual number.”

1. Turn off call forwarding. For steps, read “Turn off call forwarding”.

2. Open **Account & settings**.

3. Tap **Claim** next to **Your HiFi number**.

After you switch, calls to your personal number ring your phone directly and don’t go to HiFi. Only calls to your **HiFi number** go to HiFi.

## Which number do my HiFi calls come from?

When you call from HiFi, the person you call sees your **HiFi number**. Calls you make from your phone’s built-in Phone app still show your personal number.

**On Android:** If you have more than one line, you can choose which number HiFi uses for outgoing calls in **Account & settings > Manage phone numbers > Outbound calling**. Choose **Ask me each time** to pick a number with each call.
